Learn More About senior Care in Edmonton

Edmonton is Alberta’s capital and its second-largest city, and it carries a demographic profile that sets it apart from most Canadian cities of comparable size. With a median age of roughly 37 to 38 years and a senior population representing approximately 14 percent of total residents, Edmonton is one of the youngest major cities in the country. That is not a reason to overlook it as a senior living market. It is a reason to understand that the market here is in an earlier growth phase than cities like Ottawa or Vancouver, with significant capacity being added as the population ages into those years.

Getting Around Edmonton
Edmonton Transit Service (ETS): LRT network (Capital Line north-south, Metro Line central/north, Valley Line east-west opened 2023) and bus network (180+ routes). The downtown area has an extensive pedestrian pedway system connecting major buildings and LRT stations.
DATS (Dedicated Accessible Transit Service): ETS's door-to-door paratransit service for Edmontonians who cannot use regular transit. Requires registration. ETS also operates On Demand Transit for select neighbourhoods and seniors' residences across the city.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG), approximately 30 km south of downtown. One of the furthest major airports from a city centre in Canada. Route 747 bus connects the airport to Century Park LRT station daily. Taxi and rideshare are the most direct options for most travellers.
Very limited. Edmonton is not a regular stop on scheduled VIA Rail corridor service. The Canadian (Toronto to Vancouver) passes through Edmonton infrequently and is not a practical intercity option. Road and air are the primary ways in and out of the city.
Varies significantly. Oliver, Glenora, Westmount, and Old Strathcona are walkable inner-city neighbourhoods. Most of Edmonton's suburban areas are car-dependent. The river valley pathway network covers over 160 km and connects many parts of the city for pedestrians and cyclists.
Highway 2 (QEII) runs north to Edmonton from Calgary (approximately 300 km, about 3 hours). The Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16) runs east-west through the city. Ring roads (Anthony Henday Drive and Whitemud Drive) circle much of the city.
Senior Care in Alberta
Alberta Health Services (AHS) administers access to publicly funded continuing care. Private supportive living is licensed by the Government of Alberta.
Continuing Care Act (Alberta), effective April 1, 2024. Replaced the Nursing Homes Act and Supportive Living Accommodation Licensing Act, among others.
Assisted Living, Continuing Care, Independent Living, Long-Term Care, Memory Care, Palliative Care, Respite Care, Retirement Home, Skilled Nursing, Supportive Housing
Publicly funded continuing care homes (Type A and Type B) are accessed through an AHS case manager assessment. Health and personal care costs in designated facilities are covered by AHS. Residents pay an accommodation charge set by the Government of Alberta.
Alberta has both publicly designated continuing care homes and privately operated supportive living. Private-pay supportive living can be accessed directly without an AHS referral. Publicly funded placements are prioritized by assessed need.

Edmonton’s senior living options span the full spectrum of care, from independent and supportive living through to continuing care homes for those with higher medical needs. Like all of Alberta, the province governs this system through the Continuing Care Act, which took effect in April 2024. Access to publicly funded continuing care is coordinated through Alberta Health Services, which assesses individuals based on their care needs and connects them with appropriate placements. For families considering private-pay supportive living, direct access through the operator is available without an AHS referral, which simplifies the entry point considerably.

Edmonton is a large, spread-out city, and like Calgary, it is largely car-oriented outside its central neighbourhoods. The LRT network, operated by Edmonton Transit Service, covers key north-south and east-west corridors and has expanded in recent years with the opening of the Valley Line in 2023. Inner-city neighbourhoods like Glenora, Westmount, Oliver, and the river valley communities are walkable and well-served by transit. Much of Edmonton’s newer residential development sits further from LRT lines, which is worth considering when a senior’s ability to drive is in question.

For families travelling to visit, Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is approximately 30 kilometres south of downtown, making it one of the furthest-from-centre major airports in Canada. This is worth knowing for out-of-town family members planning visits, as the airport connection requires either a car or the Route 747 bus to Century Park LRT station, which then connects to the city’s rail network. The drive between Edmonton and Calgary is approximately three hours on Highway 2, making the two cities reasonably accessible to families with members in both.

Edmonton’s senior living market continues to grow alongside its population. The city has seen meaningful investment in new senior care capacity in recent years, and families searching here will find options ranging from smaller community-based homes to larger full-service retirement communities.
